A new type of wind turbine has come into the US and Canadian market. It was launched back in late 2008 by a Scottish company called Renewable Devices. It was designed for quiet roof-top performance which can provide significant power for homes and commercial buildings.
The name of this new wind turbine is called the Swift wind turbine and its being sold in the US by a company called Cascade Engineering of Grand Rapids. As you may know already.. or if you at least stand by a wind turbine in action, you will realize that its pretty noisy! Wind turbines have had complaints in the past about noise pollution.
However, with this new Swift wind turbine, it is designed to reduce noise levels. The wind turbine is seven feet in diameter and it consists of five thin blades. These blades are then encircled by a ring. The ring reduces vibration and also diffuses the noise to a level of under 35 decibels.
Cascade Engineering have stated that for the wind turbine to work effectively, it should be positioned at least two feet above the roof line in locations where their is average wind! The two fins direct the turbine to face the wind, with the ability to turn 360 degrees if necessary. The blades then simply power a generator, which produces about 1.5 kilowatts when their is 14 mph wind.
How much electricity can this new wind turbine generate?
Well... over a year, the swift wind turbine can generate roughly 2,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. This is a pretty significant percentage of the 6,500 to 10,000 kilowatt-hours per year that US households typically consume.
However, as with any typical wind turbine installation, this baby doesn't come cheap! The installation costs run at about $10,000. However, There are some tax rebates which can help out with the cost. Depending on some of the incentives and performance levels of the Swift Wind turbine, Cascade engineering suggest that the upfront cost of this device could be made up in as little as three years. This is a pretty good sign indeed!
However... if you feel that the cost is still a little too pricey, you can always go for a cheaper DIY option! Interested? Then take a look at the links below.
Home wind turbines are a great way of reducing your energy costs. The cheapest way to own a wind turbine generator is to build a wind turbine. Visit the links above to find out more!
